Rabid raccoon found in Linden

LINDEN, NJ — A raccoon found exhibiting abnormal behavior tested positive for rabies on Jan. 13, 2026, according to the Linden Police Department.

Officials located the animal in the area of E. Linden Ave between S. Park Ave and Ashton Ave.

No additional cases have been reported, and authorities say this appears to be an isolated incident.

Residents living in the area are asked to report any direct human or pet contact with suspected rabid animals to the Linden Board of Health at (908) 474-8409.

During emergencies or non-business hours, residents should contact the Linden Police Department at (908) 474-8500 or by dialing 9-1-1.

Authorities are advising residents to avoid contact with wild or stray animals exhibiting suspicious behaviors, including abnormal aggression or tameness, nocturnal animals active during daytime, staggering or paralysis, excessive drooling, or difficulty swallowing or eating.
