Man arrested on felony charge in Union

UNION, NY — A traffic stop for an expired registration led to the arrest of an Apalachin man on a felony charge.

New York State Police at Endwell arrested Jimmy Groats, 38, of Apalachin on Jan. 12, 2026, at approximately 5:32 p.m. for the class E felony of aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree.

A trooper on West Main Street in the town of Union observed a Ford Mustang with an expired registration and initiated a traffic stop.

While interviewing Groats, the trooper learned that Groats does not have a valid driver’s license and has been suspended more than 10 times.

Groats was arrested and transported to State Police Endwell where he was processed and later transported to the Broome County Jail for centralized arraignment.
