SHERBURNE, NY — A Syracuse man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred July 4.
Zackery M. Kulas, 37, of Syracuse, was charged with manslaughter in the second degree, leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and tampering with physical evidence.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said Kulas was driving eastbound on State Highway 80 in the Town of Sherburne during the evening hours of July 4 when his vehicle struck Jeffery Maxson, 59, of Sherburne.
Maxson was walking westbound along State Highway 80 at the time of the incident.
The arrest followed an extensive investigation conducted by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the New York State Police and in consultation with the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office.
Kulas is being held at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office pending arraignment.
The Syracuse Police Department and the City of Norwich Police Department also assisted in the investigation.
