Suspect arrested in fatal hit-and-run in Waterbury

WATERBURY, CT — Police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian last month.

Dion Schontten, 23, of Waterbury, was taken into custody on Jan. 7, 2026, during a probation appointment.

He is charged with evading responsibility resulting in death, tampering with physical evidence, misconduct with a motor vehicle and illegal operation of a motor vehicle under suspension.

The incident occurred on Dec. 28 at 9:14 p.m. when police responded to the area of 410 Reidville Drive for reports of an accident involving a pedestrian.

Officers found a pedestrian lying on the roadway with facial trauma.

The striking vehicle and its operator had left the scene before police arrived.

The pedestrian was identified as Sabrina Starkey, 43, of Waterbury.

Starkey was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Crash investigators identified Schontten as the suspect driver and determined there was probable cause that he was operating the vehicle during the incident.

A warrant was secured for his arrest.
