Coyote with mange spotted in South Portland

1 min read

SOUTH PORTLAND, ME — Animal control officials are monitoring a coyote with mange in the Ferry Village area.

The South Portland Animal Control Officer and Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife are aware of an increase in mange cases in the area, most recently observed in the coyote.

Officials have attempted to capture the animal but say it remains healthy enough to evade capture.

The coyote is not exhibiting aggressive behavior and continues to flee when approached, according to police.

Animal control officials recommend leaving the coyote alone unless circumstances change.

Stressing the animal can hinder its ability to recover from mange, and some animals are able to recover on their own, officials said.

Mange is ever-present in the environment, according to authorities.

Residents are reminded to keep outdoor pets up to date on their monthly preventatives and to avoid attempting contact with any wildlife, even if an animal appears sick or injured.
