FALL RIVER, MA — A man has been charged after approximately 50 mattresses were illegally dumped near Innovation Way in December, police said.

Hemson Etienne was identified through an investigation that involved analyzing distinguishing features on the mattresses and reviewing video surveillance, according to the Fall River Police Department.

The investigation revealed a U-Haul vehicle was used in the dumping, which occurred just before Christmas in the city’s industrial park.

Police said Etienne had been hired by a local hotel undergoing renovations to properly dispose of the mattresses.

The Massachusetts State Police assisted in the investigation after having previously encountered the U-Haul during a traffic stop.

Officers William Medeiros, Matthew Belben and Kris Sousa conducted the investigation.

Etienne has been criminally charged and the city will seek restitution for labor and disposal costs, police said.
