Pickup truck crashes into residence in Groton

GROTON, CT — A pickup truck equipped with a snow plow crashed into an unoccupied home Tuesday morning, displacing a family and rendering the residence uninhabitable.

The Groton Emergency Communications Center received several 911 calls at approximately 8:10 a.m. reporting that a motor vehicle had struck a building in the area of Fort Hill Road and Newtown Road.

Responding officers found a silver 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, equipped with a snow plow and sander, partially inside a residence on Utica Court, which abuts Fort Hill Road.

The operator was medically evaluated on scene for minor injuries and did not require transportation to a hospital.

The residence was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

The initial investigation indicates the pickup truck was traveling south on Newtown Road (Route 117), crossed through the intersection at Fort Hill Road, continued over the sidewalk on the south side of Fort Hill Road, and struck the residence on Utica Court.

Due to damage sustained in the crash, the residence was deemed uninhabitable by the Town of Groton Building Inspector.

The Groton Police Department’s Community Outreach Specialist, along with the American Red Cross, is assisting the displaced family.

Emergency responders from the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton Ambulance, Yale New Haven Health / Lawrence and Memorial Paramedics, and the Groton City Police Department responded to the scene to assist Groton Police.

Traffic on Fort Hill Road and Newtown Road was briefly interrupted while emergency crews worked, but has since returned to normal flow.

The operator of the pickup truck was identified as Ricardo Mota-Reyes, 26, of Providence, Rhode Island.

Mota-Reyes was cited for failure to obey traffic control signal and failure to drive in proper lane.

The crash remains under investigation.
