Two arrested on burglary charges in Cortlandville

CORTLANDVILLE, NY — Two people were arrested on felony charges after allegedly stealing merchandise from a Walmart where they had previously been banned.

Miranda L. Simmons, 21, of Lafayette, and Richard E. Briere, 21, of Cortlandville, were each charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny, fifth-degree conspiracy and endangering the welfare of a child.

Officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Walmart at 819 Bennie Road at 10:06 p.m. on Jan. 2 for a larceny complaint.

The suspects had left the scene but were located in the area by officers.

Authorities determined that Briere and Simmons had stolen merchandise from the store and that both had previously been issued no-trespassing orders from Walmart.

Briere was arrested at 9:33 p.m. and Simmons was arrested at 10:06 p.m.

Both were transported to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office for processing.

The defendants were arraigned through the Centralized Arraignment Process at 9 a.m. on Jan. 3 and released on their own recognizance.

Simmons is scheduled to appear in Town of Cortlandville Court on Jan. 14 at 11:30 a.m.

Briere is scheduled to appear in Town of Cortlandville Court on Jan. 12 at 11 a.m.
