NEW BEDFORD, MA — A 16-year-old juvenile is in custody following a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed Nicolasa Ventura Colaj shortly after midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Detectives secured an arrest warrant for the juvenile as a result of an intensive investigation, according to the New Bedford Police Department.
The juvenile is being charged with motor vehicle homicide, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, and two violations related to operating with a junior operator’s license.
Investigators previously identified, located, and seized the vehicle involved in the crash.
The investigation was conducted by members of the New Bedford Police Department in coordination with the Massachusetts State Police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
“This was a thorough and relentless investigation carried out under extremely difficult circumstances,” said Chief Jason Thody.
Thody thanked emergency personnel who responded and provided lifesaving measures.
“While nothing can undo this tragic loss, we are committed to seeing this investigation through and ensuring Nicolasa’s family sees accountability and justice,” Thody said.
Mayor Jon Mitchell said he was grateful for the investigative work of the police department, State Police and the district attorney’s office.
