STAMFORD, CT — A 68-year-old man was arrested after a shooting incident that left one person injured on New Year’s Eve.
Stamford Police officers were dispatched to the area of 1 Strawberry Hill Court at approximately 10:04 p.m. on a report of a male running southbound on Morgan Street while armed with a handgun.
As officers were responding, additional 911 calls were received reporting shots fired near the Tully Center.
Officers who were already in the area canvassing for an unrelated incident heard a male yelling that he had been shot.
Officers immediately located the victim and began rendering medical aid.
The victim was found to have sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to Stamford Hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Other responding officers located a male, later identified as Raymond Downey, 68, of Stamford, walking southbound on Morgan Street while holding a black handgun.
Officers confronted Downey and issued multiple commands for him to drop the firearm.
Downey initially failed to comply and continued walking toward officers.
After further commands were given, Downey placed the firearm on the ground and was ordered to step away from it.
Once he was safely separated from the weapon, officers approached and detained him without further incident.
Multiple evidence locations were identified throughout the area, resulting in the establishment of several crime scenes.
Several shell casings and a firearm were recovered.
Detectives from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Crime Scene Unit responded to process the scenes and assist with the investigation.
Downey was charged with assault in the first degree, unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment and breach of peace.
