GENEVA, NY — A 52-year-old man faces felony animal cruelty charges after a dog was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in an apartment.

Jason M. Bunnell, of Geneva, was arrested Dec. 29 following a joint investigation by the Ontario County Humane Society and Geneva Police Department.

Authorities discovered a deceased dog with numerous gunshot wounds on the kitchen floor of an apartment at 512 South Main Street.

The investigation began after police were called to the address for a suspicious condition incident.

A second dog, a Golden Doodle named Beau, was removed from the residence and appeared uninjured.

Bunnell was watching the dogs for his father, who is recovering from surgery, according to William Martin, shelter director for the Ontario County Humane Society.

The deceased dog, Winston, will be transported to the Cornell Animal Diagnostic Center for a necropsy to confirm the cause of death.

Investigators determined there was no justifiable reason to shoot the dog.

Bunnell was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class E felony.

He is being held in the Ontario County Jail on related charges from the incident.
