Two arrested on armed robbery charges in Guttenberg

GUTTENBERG, NJ — Two men were arrested Dec. 23 after allegedly attempting to rob a business on Kennedy Boulevard while armed with a knife and a handgun, police said.

Police Officer Frank Dubicki Jr. was on patrol in the area of Kennedy Boulevard when a man flagged him down and reported that two individuals had entered his business on the 6800 block of Kennedy Boulevard armed with weapons and attempted to rob him, according to the Guttenberg Police Department.

The victim directed the officer to a nearby gas station, where one of the suspects, Carlos J. Hernandez, of Wallington, was seated inside a pickup truck.

Hernandez was taken into custody without incident.

Shortly after, the officer observed Crismar Vasquez, of West New York, the second man involved in the incident, walking toward the gas station and approaching the pickup truck.

Vasquez was taken into custody without incident.

On Dec. 25, following approval of a Superior Court authorized search warrant, members of the Guttenberg Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit recovered a Ruger Max 9 handgun chambered in 9mm with a high-capacity magazine, hollow-point and full-metal jacket ammunition, and a Mace Pepper Gun from the vehicle.

Hernandez was charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, unlawful possession of a handgun without a permit, certain persons not to have weapons or ammunition, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, carrying a handgun openly and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes involving an imitation firearm.

Vasquez was charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, violations of regulatory provisions relating to firearms, possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of hollow-point ammunition, unlawful possession of a handgun without a permit and certain persons not to have weapons or ammunition.

Both men were lodged in the Hudson County Correctional Center.
