CORTLAND, NY — Authorities in Cortland County are warning residents about a recent scam involving phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be police officers.

According to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, multiple community members have reported receiving calls in which the caller identifies themselves as a police officer and requests payment.

The callers reportedly demand payment in the form of gift cards, Apple cards, or other methods, claiming that this will prevent legal action or arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that no legitimate police agency will ever contact citizens by phone to request payment or financial information.

Residents are urged not to provide personal or banking information to unknown callers and not to send any form of payment as requested in the scams.

Authorities advise reaching out to family and friends, particularly those who may be more vulnerable, to ensure they are aware of this scam.

Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to contact the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office or their local law enforcement agency.
