NORWICH, NY — A 44-year-old man was arrested Dec. 22 following a larceny complaint at a local business.

Luis A. Calixto, of Norwich, was taken into custody by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office after store personnel reported a larceny in progress.

Deputies said Calixto removed multiple items from their packaging and attempted to conceal them on his person.

He also attempted to hide merchandise throughout the store while trying to avoid contact with store personnel and law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators learned that Calixto had previously been trespassed from the business property.

After being taken into custody, deputies discovered that Calixto was in possession of small wax envelopes containing a white powder-like substance, as well as a small canister containing a white crystal-like substance.

While in custody, Calixto allegedly attempted to conceal several of the wax envelopes in an effort to avoid additional charges, deputies said.

Calixto was charged with third-degree burglary, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal mischief and tampering with physical evidence.

He was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.
