Head-on collision under investigation in Wallingford

WALLINGFORD, VT — Vermont State Police are investigating a head-on collision that occurred on U.S. Route 7 near Hartsboro Road on Oct. 11.

Troopers from the Rutland Barracks responded to the crash at approximately 1:28 p.m. after receiving reports that one vehicle was on fire.

The investigation revealed that Barry McPhee-Loyzelle, 43, of West Rutland, was traveling southbound on U.S. Route 7 when he exited the west side of the roadway, reentered, and then crossed the center line into the northbound lane.

McPhee-Loyzelle’s 2022 Toyota Tacoma collided head-on with a 2019 Volkswagen Passat operated by Deborah Roberts, 70, of Clarendon.

Both operators sustained injuries and were transported by rescue to Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Roberts was later transferred to UVM Medical Center, while McPhee-Loyzelle was transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Troopers responded to Rutland Regional Medical Center to continue the investigation.

While at the hospital, McPhee-Loyzelle displayed signs of impairment and was processed for suspicion of driving under the influence, police said.

Criminal charges are pending.

The Tacoma sustained extensive front-end damage, while the Passat was totaled.

Weather conditions at the time were sunny and cool, with clear, dry roads.

The Wallingford Fire Department, Wallingford Rescue and Regional Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
