SANFORD, NY — Firefighters battled a chimney fire that spread into the walls of a single-family home early Saturday morning.

The Deposit Fire Department, Eastern Broome Emergency Services and the Harpursville Fire Department were dispatched to North Sanford Road just after 1 a.m. on Dec. 14.

A resident reported a smoke condition on the second floor of the home.

Crews arrived to find a working fire on the second floor.

The fire started in the chimney of a wood burning appliance and spread into the walls of the structure.

All residents escaped uninjured.

Crews worked to knock down the fire, with extensive overhaul required due to the type of building construction.

A second alarm was requested due to the complexity of the fire and the home’s location in a non-hydranted district.

Apparatus from Harpursville Fire, Afton Fire, Windsor Fire, Masonville Fire, West Windsor Fire and Superior Ambulance responded to the scene.

Trout Creek Fire provided a standby engine crew at the Deposit station to cover the district while units operated at the fire.

Responding Deposit apparatus included Midi-Pumper 22, Engine 22, Squad 22, Pumper-Tanker 22, Utility 22 and Eastern Broome Ambulance 8423.
