STANDISH, ME — Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said his office is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the death of a 5-year-old kindergarten student.

Simon Gonzalez, a student at Edna Libby School, died Tuesday in what Joyce described as a “horrific event.”

Joyce said in a letter to the community Thursday that the investigation is complex and involves multiple layers.

Investigators are awaiting results of medical and mechanical examinations of evidence, according to Joyce.

The sheriff’s office is working with local, state and federal partners on accident reconstruction, interviewing witnesses, reviewing video and processing forensic evidence collected at the scene.

Joyce asked the public to refrain from speculating and spreading misinformation about the incident.

He also requested that people stop posting rhetoric about the incident on social media.

Joyce said he will provide updates as information becomes available that does not jeopardize the investigation.
