CHARLTON, MA — A man was arrested early Saturday following a high-speed chase that began in Southbridge and ended with him hiding in a partially frozen retention pond.

Charlton police were notified shortly after 1 a.m. Nov. 29 that Southbridge officers were pursuing a vehicle whose occupants had been involved in a disturbance.

The vehicle failed to stop for police and entered Charlton on Southbridge Road at high speeds, according to the Charlton Police Department.

Charlton officers deployed stop sticks on Southbridge Road before Route 20, which deflated the vehicle’s two front tires.

The vehicle traveled a short distance on Route 20 before turning into the parking lot at 53 Sturbridge Road.

The driver fled on foot while the passenger was detained without incident.

K9 Dozer tracked the suspect across a driveway to a partially frozen retention pond.

Officer Tretheway deployed the department’s drone, which used specialized cameras to locate the man crawling out of the pond.

The man surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident after officers were radioed his location.

Charges have been filed against the driver.

The Southbridge Police Department assisted in the incident.
