Officer remembered 53 years after fatal crash in Boston

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Police Department on Wednesday commemorated the 53rd anniversary of the death of Officer Joseph M. Mullen, who was killed in the line of duty.

Officer Mullen died on Dec. 18, 1972, when he was struck by a motor vehicle while directing traffic during an overtime assignment at the John Hancock Tower in Copley Square.

He was 61 years old at the time of his death and had served with the department for 35 years.

Officer Mullen was survived by his wife and two children.

He was laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury.

His name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., on Panel 13, East Line 15.

His name is also inscribed on the Boston Police Department’s Wall of Honor on the first floor of police headquarters and on the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial on the grounds of the State House on Beacon Street.

A Hero Sign honoring his life and service is posted in the area of Trinity Place and Stuart Street in the Back Bay.
