UTICA, NY — A man was arrested following a domestic incident that left a police officer with a broken hand.
Utica Police units were dispatched to a residence on the 1200 block of Lansing Street at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Dec. 10 regarding a domestic related incident.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with a victim who stated that her child’s father came to the residence and an argument ensued.
During the course of the argument, the male began to slap the female in the face, and initially another party was able to intervene and try to separate the two.
After a few moments, the suspect again ran at the victim and began to place his hands around her neck and attempted to choke her.
The male was again removed from the victim and pushed outside of the residence.
While outside, the male broke a window on the residence and appeared to leave the scene.
While officers were on scene interviewing the victim, they noticed that the suspect was still in the vicinity.
Officers attempted to stop the male, however he fled on foot.
Officers gave chase and caught up to the male on the 800 block of Bacon Street.
The male immediately began to physically fight with the officers, and after some time they were able to take the male into custody.
Following the struggle, one of the officers realized he had injured his hand and ultimately sought treatment at Wynn Hospital where it was learned that he had broken bones in that hand as a result of the suspect’s resisting his arrest.
The suspect, Ryum Calhoun, 34, of Utica, was transported to the Utica Police Department.
At the conclusion of the investigation, he was charged with assault in the second degree, obstruction of breathing, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and harassment in the second degree.
