UTICA, NY — A 42-year-old man was arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop Saturday night.

Officers assigned to the Crime Prevention Unit and Patrol Division were conducting narcotics enforcement activities when they stopped a vehicle on Burrstone Road near Sarah Street at approximately 8 p.m. on Dec. 13.

During interviews with the occupants, police said the parties provided differing stories about their whereabouts and activities prior to the stop.

Based on this and other factors, the occupants were asked to exit the vehicle, and narcotics smoking devices were initially turned over during the conversation, police said.

During further questioning, officers learned that one of the parties, Fredrick Canfield of Garratsville, New York, had hidden narcotics inside his pants, according to police.

Canfield was transported to the Utica Police Department, where the narcotics were located and determined to be felony weight.

Canfield was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree.
