Police task force reactivated to combat holiday theft in Quincy

QUINCY, MA — The Quincy Police Department has reactivated its Shoplifting and Package Theft Task Force for a second year to address a spike in theft incidents during the holiday season.

The specialized unit is tasked with combating shoplifting and package thefts in the city.

Although national reporting from SafeWise indicates a slight drop in national incidents of package theft, it is estimated that 1 in 33 Massachusetts residents loses a package every three months.

Last year, the department made it a priority to address rising incidents of shoplifting and package theft.

From the beginning of October through the end of the year, the task force handled 115 shoplifting and package theft calls.

By dedicating specific officers to forge relationships with retail and delivery company partners, the department has consistently addressed these types of crimes.

The enforcement has allowed task force officers to focus on criminals that operate throughout the region and beyond Quincy.

The department’s approach includes daily coordination with retail partners, store managers, loss-prevention personnel and collaboration with neighboring police departments.

These efforts are part of disrupting organized retail theft and deterring package thefts in Quincy.

Anyone with information regarding organized retail theft or package theft is urged to contact the Quincy Police Department at (617) 479-1212.
