Second suspect arrested in Springfield homicide

SPRINGFIELD, MA — Members of the Springfield Police Homicide Unit arrested a second suspect Friday morning in connection with a fatal shooting last month.

Joey Sanchez, 27, of Chicopee, was taken into custody at approximately 7 a.m. Dec. 12 on Quincy Street.

The arrest stems from a Nov. 30 shooting on Home Street where officers responded at approximately 10:40 p.m. to a report of a gunshot victim.

Officers located an adult male gunshot victim inside an apartment.

The victim was transported to Baystate where he died from his injuries.

The Hampden District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as Shain West, 27, of Springfield.

Investigators identified Daevon Shular, 21, of Seguin, Texas, as a suspect and arrested him Dec. 1 at Baystate.

Shular had been privately transported to the hospital Nov. 30 with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Detectives continued investigating and identified Sanchez as a second suspect.

A warrant for Sanchez’s arrest was issued Dec. 10.

Members of the Springfield Police Homicide Unit, Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Massachusetts State Police VFAS West and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department made the arrest.

Sanchez is charged with murder, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and attempt to commit a crime.

Shular faces the same charges.
