NEW BEDFORD, MA — A man was arrested after shots were fired, a vehicle crash and the seizure of drugs and a firearm.

Officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the area of County Street just after 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a motor vehicle crash nearby on Spring Street involving a vehicle whose operator had fled on foot.

Officers located the operator, identified as Tyrell Sanchez, 31, of Plymouth, who had a gunshot wound to his lower left leg.

He was transported to the hospital for treatment.

A search of Sanchez’s vehicle revealed a Glock 43 handgun loaded with five rounds of 9mm ammunition and two plastic bags of cocaine weighing over two kilos.

Police recovered $2,200 in U.S. currency from Sanchez and seized it as suspected drug proceeds.

Detectives learned that shots had been fired at Sanchez prior to the crash and observed gunfire damage to a nearby residence.

Sanchez does not hold a Massachusetts license to carry firearms.

He was arrested and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and trafficking in 200 grams or more of cocaine.

The investigation is ongoing.
