ROCKLAND, ME — A man already facing sexual abuse charges was arrested on a witness tampering charge after allegedly trying to contact a victim through another inmate.
Matthew Boegel, 27, of Bowdoin, was charged with felony tampering with a witness, informant, juror or victim on Dec. 10.
Rockland Police received a complaint on Dec. 9 regarding victim tampering.
At the time of the incident, Boegel was incarcerated on charges of felony sexual abuse of minors and violation of conditions of release.
Police said Boegel passed a letter to another incarcerated person, who was later released and delivered the message to the victim of Boegel’s prior alleged crimes.
The letter asked the victim to stop cooperating with law enforcement, according to police.
Detectives from the Rockland Criminal Investigation Division followed up on the case and filed the tampering charge.
