Man arrested on child sexual abuse material charges in Houlton

HOULTON, ME — Police arrested a 36-year-old man on child sexual abuse material charges following a weeks-long investigation.

Brian F. Hayes, of Houlton, was arrested Nov. 25 at approximately 1:37 p.m. and charged with dissemination of sexually explicit material, a Class B crime; possession of sexually explicit material, a Class C crime; and domestic violence criminal threatening, a Class D crime.

The Houlton Police Department launched an investigation Nov. 3 after a witness reported observing child sexual abuse material in the possession of an adult male.

Officer Jacob Goodman spoke with the witness and began an investigation with Officer Robbins.

Officers seized a telephone based on probable cause and obtained a warrant for the phone’s content.

The Houlton Police Department, with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations, executed a search warrant on the phone.

The investigation revealed several images of child sexual abuse material and other related data, according to police.

An additional witness was interviewed as the investigation continued.

The Department of Health and Human Services also assisted with the investigation.

Hayes was transported to the Aroostook County Jail, where bail was set at $3,000 with conditions.

Hayes has since been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
