STAMFORD, CT — The Connecticut Office of the Inspector General has concluded that a man who died in the Stamford Police Department jail in January took his own life.

Jamal Linton died on Jan. 26 in the department’s cellblock facility.

The inspector general’s investigation determined the cause of death was suicide and was not the result of police use of force or criminal action.

The report found that personnel on duty did not fully adhere to department policies and procedures.

Police Chief Timothy Shaw said in a statement Tuesday that the department began its own investigation immediately following the death.

The department has made alterations to the cellblock facility to enhance safety and security for those in custody and personnel.

Shaw said proper and corrective action has been taken regarding personnel’s adherence to policies and procedures.

The department has reviewed its policies and strengthened its procedures, Shaw said.
