STERLING, NY — A 61-year-old man has been arrested following a stabbing incident at a residence in Sterling.
Russell C. Patchen, of Sterling, was arrested at 12:19 a.m. on Dec. 7 and charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, according to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck.
Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call at approximately 10:39 p.m. on Dec. 6.
When deputies arrived, they found Patchen outside the residence with a head laceration and a victim inside with stab wounds.
An investigation determined that Patchen was involved in a physical altercation with a female inside the residence when a male victim attempted to intervene.
Patchen stabbed the male victim with a letter opener and got on top of him, attempting to stab him repeatedly, according to the sheriff’s office.
The male victim grabbed a glass ashtray and struck Patchen in the head, causing him to become disoriented enough for the victim to escape.
The victim was treated at the scene by medical personnel and refused transport to a hospital.
Patchen was taken to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries before being transported to the Public Safety Building for processing and then to the Cayuga County Jail.
A judge set bail at $10,000 cash and $20,000 bond during arraignment.
Patchen posted bail on Dec. 8 and is scheduled to appear in Sterling Town Court at a later date.
