SICKLERVILLE, NJ — A 23-year-old man faces upgraded charges of aggravated manslaughter in connection with a fatal October crash that killed a 76-year-old man.
Marcus A. Young of Sicklerville was arrested on Dec. 9 after the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office approved the upgraded charges.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:13 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the intersection of Berlin Cross Keys Road and Johnson Road in the Sicklerville section of Gloucester Township.
Officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to the collision involving an SUV and a sedan.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged, and all occupants were injured.
Fire department personnel assisted with extrication, and emergency medical crews from multiple agencies provided care at the scene.
All three individuals were transported to a nearby hospital.
Louis Bontya, 76, the driver of the SUV, later died from his injuries.
His wife, Christina Bontya, 75, suffered serious injuries but survived.
The intersection remained closed for several hours while the Gloucester Township Police Department’s Serious Crash Investigation Team conducted a comprehensive on-scene investigation.
Young was initially charged on Nov. 5 with death by auto and assault by auto.
Additional information developed during the investigation led to the upgraded charges.
Young was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility.
He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control device, speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt and driving while intoxicated.
