Three charged with abandoning dogs in Watervliet

WATERVLIET, NY — Three people have been charged with abandoning two dogs on Thanksgiving in the city.

Watervliet Police officers responded to the area of 4th Street and Broadway around 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 for a report of two loose dogs.

Officers located two dogs running loose who appeared to be in good health.

The dogs were brought to the police station while officers attempted to locate their owners.

Through an investigation, officers determined the dogs had been abandoned on Thanksgiving.

Thomas P. Murphy, 58, of Albany, Melissa A. Murphy, 53, of Albany, and Michael J. Batease, 40, of Schenectady, were each charged with abandonment of animals, a misdemeanor.

Melissa A. Murphy was previously arrested in May by the Albany City Police Department on animal cruelty charges.

All three were released on appearance tickets to return to Watervliet City Court at a later date.
