PENDLETON, NY — A 16-year-old pedestrian was struck by an ambulance responding to an emergency call Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Mapleton and Townline roads.
The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting the crash at approximately 12 p.m.
Deputies determined that a 2023 Ford F450 ambulance was traveling eastbound on Mapleton Road enroute to a call for service when a 2024 Hyundai traveling northbound on Wheatfield-Pendleton Townline Road failed to yield the right of way at the intersection.
The ambulance struck the Hyundai, causing both vehicles to travel northeast across the intersection.
The ambulance then struck the 16-year-old male pedestrian who had been walking westbound on the north shoulder of Mapleton Road.
Both vehicles came to rest in a ditch along the north edge of Mapleton Road following the collision.
The 42-year-old male driver of the Hyundai was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to ECMC for non-life-threatening injuries.
The ambulance crew consisted of a 35-year-old female driver and a 27-year-old male passenger, both of whom were evaluated at the scene and released.
The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification to family.
The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit is continuing its investigation into the incident.
