GEORGIA, VT — Vermont State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 89 North near mile marker 106.8 on Dec. 3.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. when Noah Bjornson, 25, of Highgate, was traveling north at interstate speeds and rear-ended a 2022 Ford Ranger driven by Joseph Rougier, 47, of Saint Albans.
According to police, a trooper had stopped to assist a disabled motorist in the left lane, causing traffic to slow to approximately 10 m.p.h.
Police said an unrelated Toyota sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed and made an abrupt lane change in front of Bjornson’s 2015 Chrysler 200.
Bjornson was unable to react quickly enough to the slowed traffic and struck the rear of Rougier’s vehicle, police said.
Both vehicles came to rest on the median and right side of the interstate.
The Toyota sedan failed to stop, and police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through the area to contact the state police.
Neither driver was injured, and both were wearing seat belts.
The interstate was closed for a short time for recovery efforts.
Weather conditions were clear and the road surface was dry at the time of the crash.
Vermont State Police were assisted by the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife, the Georgia Fire Department and Fairfax Rescue.
