Man arrested on dirt bike charges in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A Holyoke man was arrested Saturday after police seized an illegal dirt bike during an enforcement operation targeting off-highway vehicles.

Miguel Lopez III, 24, of Holyoke, was taken into custody around 1:25 p.m. after officers observed him speeding on a dirt bike on Roosevelt Avenue, according to the Springfield Police Department.

Officers later spotted the same rider on Benton Street before the dirt bike stalled in the area of Alden Street and Lakeside Street.

Police said the dirt bike was uninsured and unregistered, and Lopez was unlicensed.

The arrest came during an anti-Off-Highway-Vehicle detail conducted by Springfield police to deter illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles on city streets.

Lopez is charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, snow/recreational vehicle public way violation, miscellaneous motor vehicle equipment violation and unregistered snow/recreational vehicle.
