NEW BEDFORD, MA — A repeat offender with a lengthy criminal history was arrested after allegedly fleeing from police while in possession of a loaded firearm.
Dominic Rezendes, 35, of New Bedford, was taken into custody on Sunday after officers attempted to arrest him for an incident involving an assault with a firearm.
Officers observed Rezendes leaving his apartment and attempted to place him under arrest.
He fled into a nearby residence and ran to the back door to escape, police said.
Officers stopped him on the rear porch and secured him without further incident.
Police later discovered that Rezendes had discarded a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun for which he had no license.
Rezendes was transported to headquarters, where he was charged with carrying a loaded firearm, breaking and entering, and kidnapping.
Rezendes has a lengthy criminal history, including a 2011 shooting in Wareham for which he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to police.
He is currently on probation out of New Bedford District Court.
