BERLIN, CT — A man was arrested Tuesday after an attempted theft and subsequent foot chase at a local hardware store in Berlin, authorities said.

According to the Berlin Police Department, officers served a warrant for Hugo Mariera Esquilin as he was allegedly attempting another larceny at Harbor Freight on Nov. 20.

Police said Esquilin, of Hartford, tried to flee officers but was apprehended after a foot pursuit and deployment of a Taser.

The arrest concluded an investigation in which the department’s patrol division consolidated 14 separate larceny cases into a single count of second-degree larceny and organized retail theft, police said.

Authorities allege Esquilin stole nearly $18,000 in merchandise in Berlin and over $50,000 throughout Connecticut.

At the time of his arrest, police said, Esquilin had eight active PRAWN warrants and five additional warrants from other agencies.
