WEST PAWLET, VT — Vermont State Police are investigating a homicide following the death of a man who was assaulted in August at a slate quarry.
Mark Ray, 54, of West Pawlet, died late Wednesday at Albany Medical Center in New York.
An autopsy was performed Friday in New York.
The cause of Ray’s death was determined to be pneumonia and severe traumatic brain injury due to assault, and the manner of death is a homicide.
Troopers received a report of a suspicious incident at about 9:51 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Newmont Slate Quarry at 720 VT Route 149.
By the time troopers arrived on scene, Ray had been transported from the scene by medical first responders.
He was subsequently transported to Albany Medical Center to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigation conducted by state police detectives indicated Ray’s injuries likely were the result of an assault.
No one is currently in custody.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
