Security guard shoots knife-wielding man in Newburgh hospital

NEWBURGH, NY — A security guard shot and killed a man who attacked him with a knife at a hospital emergency room on Nov. 13.

City of Newburgh Police responded to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital emergency room lobby at approximately 11:07 p.m. for a report of a shot fired.

Prior to the police call, the City of Newburgh Fire Department was dispatched to the hospital for a fire alarm pulled in the emergency room lobby.

Police learned a disorderly individual in the emergency room lobby had pulled the fire alarm.

Hospital security staff confronted the individual, who then brandished a knife and attacked a security guard.

An armed security guard fired a single round, which incapacitated the attacker.

The attacker, Carlos Ortiz, 45, of Newburgh, was later pronounced deceased.

A woman in close proximity to the altercation was also injured with what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury.

No charges have been filed at this time.

The incident is being investigated by the City of Newburgh Detective Division and the Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force.
