MANCHESTER, NH — Police are warning residents about a scam involving someone impersonating Manchester police officers.
The department said it has received reports of people receiving text messages from someone claiming to be a Manchester police officer.
Police said scammers often use the name of a real department officer to make their messages appear legitimate.
In a recent case, the scammer sent a text message saying they were investigating a crime involving the recipient.
Police said while officers may send text messages during an ongoing investigation, they would never initiate an investigation with a text message.
The department is advising residents to never share personal information through text or email.
Police said anyone who is unsure about the legitimacy of a message should call the Manchester Police Department directly.
