Woman killed in single-vehicle crash in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND, RI — A 25-year-old woman died when her vehicle struck a tree and caught fire on West Wrentham Road late Tuesday night.

Emma Bates, of Lincoln, was pronounced dead at the scene after her vehicle left the roadway and collided with a large tree, according to Cumberland Police Chief Matthew J. Benson.

The vehicle quickly became engulfed in flames following the crash, which occurred in the late evening hours of Nov. 11.

A local resident who heard the initial crash attempted to assist before it became too dangerous, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by Cumberland Police Department crash reconstruction members.
