AUBURN, NY — A police officer and sheriff’s deputy rescued a man from a burning home on Perry Street on Wednesday afternoon.
Officer P. Flickner of the Auburn Police Department was on routine patrol when he saw a structure fire complaint on his in-car computer at 39 Perry Street at approximately 4:01 p.m.
Flickner responded from a couple blocks away and arrived within two minutes.
When he arrived, flames were coming from the back of the house and heavy black smoke was coming from the front door and windows.
A neighbor told Flickner he had opened the front door and the dogs ran out, but he did not know if the resident was still inside.
Flickner went to the front entrance and announced himself, yelling to anyone inside.
A male resident who had been asleep woke up to Flickner’s voice and began panicking and yelling for help.
Flickner entered the residence, crawling below the smoke in an attempt to rescue the resident.
The resident was disoriented and yelling that he was upstairs.
Due to smoke inhalation, Flickner was unable to go any further into the residence.
Deputy Kelley from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene.
A neighbor alerted law enforcement to a first-floor window where he could see the sole occupant inside.
Kelley, Flickner and the neighbor pulled the occupant out the window.
The Auburn Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and began extinguishing the fire.
The occupant was treated on scene by Auburn City Ambulance.
Flickner was also treated on scene by Auburn City Ambulance members.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
