Hiker rescued after falling down ravine in Boonville

BOONVILLE, NY — A 42-year-old hiker was rescued after slipping down a ravine and becoming separated from his mother on the Black River Environmental Improvement Association Trail System on Nov. 3.

Oneida County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies were dispatched to the trail system on Egypt Road at around 3 p.m. after receiving a report of a lost hiker.

The hiker, who has special needs, was hiking with his mother when he slipped down a ravine, according to Sheriff Robert Maciol.

His mother lost sight of him and contacted 911.

Deputies, along with members of the Boonville Fire Department, Barneveld Fire Department, Woodgate Fire Department, New York State Environmental Conservation Police and New York State Forest Rangers began a systematic search of the area using UTVs, ATVs and drones.

At about 5 p.m., members of the Boonville Fire Department located the hiker safe and uninjured.

He was escorted out of the trail system back to Egypt Road, where he received treatment from Boonville Ambulance for exposure.
