Student threat investigated in North Berwick

NORTH BERWICK, ME — Police investigated an unsubstantiated threat of a school shooting at Noble Middle/High School that led to interviews with numerous students over a six-hour period Thursday.

The School Resource Officer at Noble Middle/High School was notified at approximately 11:30 a.m. Thursday of a third-party hearsay threat regarding a school shooting at the campus, according to a press release from the North Berwick Police Department.

The threat that was overheard had allegedly been made four days earlier.

The SRO and Noble Administration began investigating immediately and spent the next six hours interviewing students to determine the credibility of the alleged threat.

Based on the interviews and available evidence, police determined the reports of an act of violence occurring Friday at Noble Middle/High School were unsubstantiated, not credible and false.

Police said the investigation resembled “the childhood game of telephone,” with each interview leading to another name and another student who said they never actually heard anything directly but heard it from someone else.

The investigation ultimately led back to a student who stated they had psychic powers and had a feeling there was going to be a school shooting, according to police.

Police discouraged anyone from using social media to spread unverified information and rumors regarding acts of violence, stating it hinders investigations and creates panic within the community.

Police also stated that a “blue-haired kid” being targeted on social media is not the source of the threat and is being wrongfully targeted.
