BATH, NY — New York State Police have arrested two people following an investigation into alleged witness intimidation in an ongoing criminal case.
Terry C. Long, 52, of Bath, and Tammy J. Havens, 52, of Prattsburgh, were charged after investigators determined they attempted to influence a protected party to recant sworn statements.
On June 23, investigators from State Police Bath were contacted by a representative of the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office regarding messages sent to a protected party.
The investigation determined that Havens had contacted the victim on behalf of Long, who was incarcerated at the time, and attempted to influence the victim to recant sworn statements in exchange for property.
A review of Steuben County Jail communication records revealed that Long had directed Havens to contact the victim, offering inducements and making threats through electronic messages.
On June 25, Havens was arrested at State Police Bath and charged with criminal facilitation in the fourth degree and tampering with a witness in the fourth degree, both misdemeanors.
She was remanded to the Steuben County Jail to await centralized arraignment, and an order of protection was obtained on behalf of the victim.
Both Havens and Long were indicted by a Steuben County Grand Jury on Oct. 14.
On Oct. 27, Long was transported to State Police Bath by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and formally processed on the indictment charges before being returned to state custody.
Long was charged with bribing a witness, a felony; aggravated family offense, a felony; tampering with a witness in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor; and criminal contempt in the second degree, a misdemeanor.
