Man charged with murder in Paterson stabbing

PATERSON, NJ — A 29-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection to a fatal stabbing that occurred on Oct. 22 in the area of Market Street and Veterans Place.

Jean Romelus, of Asbury Park, was arrested on Oct. 28 without incident, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Patrick Murray.

Romelus is charged with murder, first degree; unlawful possession of a weapon, fourth degree; and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, third degree.

On Oct. 22 at approximately 2:21 p.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Market Street and Veterans Place on a reported stabbing.

When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim, William Davis, 38, of Paterson, lying on the sidewalk with multiple stab wounds.

Davis was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that Romelus stabbed the victim.

The State will file a motion for pretrial detention against Romelus which will be heard by a Superior Court judge at a date and time to be determined by the court.
