RAMAPO, NY — Police are warning residents about multiple coyote sightings throughout town.
The Ramapo Police Department said it has received several reports of coyotes in the area.
The warnings come after recent coyote incidents in Bergen County, New Jersey, according to police.
Police are directing residents to guidance from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on how to handle encounters with the animals.
Coyotes are a natural part of New York’s ecosystem, according to the DEC.
Most coyotes avoid people, but those that lose their fear can pose a risk, especially to small pets and children, police said.
The DEC provides information on how to handle coyote encounters and keep properties less inviting to the animals.
