Fatal fire under investigation in Benton

BENTON, ME — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal fire that occurred early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 2:07 a.m., the Office of State Fire Marshal responded to Pleasant Drive at the request of the Fairfield-Benton Fire Rescue following a report of a residential fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-family residence that was fully involved.

Mutual aid was provided by the Waterville, Albion, Clinton, Skowhegan and Oakland fire departments.

Suppression efforts brought the fire under control, though Pleasant Street was temporarily closed to allow for emergency operations.

During firefighting operations, crews located a deceased individual inside the residence.

The deceased was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to determine the cause of death and for positive identification.

One dog was also located deceased inside the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
