Driver arrested on drug charges in Plympton

PLYMPTON, MA — A driver was arrested on drug charges after nearly striking a police officer in a work zone on Brook Street.

On October 21 at approximately 9:40 a.m., Plympton Police officers were working a paid road detail for Barnes Tree Service in the area of 170 Brook Street when a black Jeep Wrangler nearly struck an officer directing traffic within the active work zone.

The vehicle failed to slow for posted signs and emergency lights and was stopped by Officers Terenzi and Broderick.

The operator was identified as Andrew Devellis, 36, of Massachusetts.

Devellis appeared impaired and was found to have been inhaling nitrous oxide while driving, according to police.

Multiple large nitrous oxide canisters were observed inside the vehicle.

Devellis was arrested without incident and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Drugs (2nd Offense), Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Inhaling a Toxic Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

A Drug Recognition Expert from the East Bridgewater Police Department was requested to assist with the investigation.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Devellis was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth for evaluation and later arraigned in Plymouth District Court.
