WARWICK, RI — Three police officers pulled a 71-year-old man from a vehicle that had sunk in water off Arnold’s Neck Road on Oct. 18.
Officers Matthew Maloney, Nicholas Manocchio and Maxwell Neiley were dispatched to 376 Arnold’s Neck Road at approximately 7:17 p.m. following a report of a vehicle submerged in water.
Upon arrival, officers observed a vehicle approximately 100 feet from shore, with only the roof visible above the waterline.
Witnesses on scene told officers they had observed a subject in the driver’s seat prior to the vehicle sinking.
Officers Maloney, Manocchio and Neiley entered the water to attempt a rescue.
The water was dark, and they could not see into the vehicle.
After blindly searching the interior of the vehicle, they were able to locate the sole occupant inside the fully submerged vehicle.
The officers successfully removed the man from the vehicle and swam back to shore with him.
The Warwick Fire Department had arrived on scene and immediately initiated life-saving measures.
The man was transported to Kent County Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
