Deputy’s cruiser sideswiped during traffic control in South Burlington

SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT — A marked sheriff’s department cruiser was sideswiped by a delivery truck while conducting a rolling roadblock on Interstate 89 on Tuesday morning.

The collision occurred at approximately 10:12 a.m. near Exit 14 on the northbound side of I-89.

Brian Welch, 70, of South Burlington, a deputy with the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department, was operating the cruiser with its blue emergency lights activated while conducting a rolling roadblock due to ongoing construction in the area.

Welch merged into the left lane when his cruiser was sideswiped by a UPS delivery truck operated by Shane Grant, 26, of Colchester.

The cruiser sustained moderate damage to the driver’s side, while the box truck sustained minor damage to the passenger’s side.

Neither operator was injured in the collision.

Both operators were wearing seat belts.

The interstate was reduced to one lane for approximately one hour while crews worked to clear the vehicles from the roadway.

Road conditions were dry and weather was cloudy at the time of the crash.

The Vermont State Police was assisted on scene by the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department and Spillaine’s Towing.

The collision remains under investigation.
