WESTMORELAND, NH — New Hampshire State Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was recovered from the Connecticut River on Sunday.
First responders were dispatched to Ferry Road at 11:15 a.m. for a report of a missing adult male.
Upon arrival, responders recovered the body of a deceased male from the river near a capsized canoe.
The deceased has been identified as Cory Walker, 41, of Westminster Station.
Information gathered with assistance from the Vermont State Police indicates that Walker frequently camped near or on the Connecticut River and occasionally slept overnight in his canoe.
The canoe was found capsized and anchored to the riverbed a short distance from shore.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be an accidental drowning.
The death is not believed to be suspicious, though the circumstances leading to the canoe’s capsizing remain under investigation.
Marine Patrol Officers were assisted at the scene by members of the NH Fish and Game Department, Westmoreland Fire-Rescue Department, Walpole police and fire departments, Spofford Fire & Rescue, Chesterfield Fire & Rescue, and divers from the Water Rescue Task Force.
